Queensrÿche’s Take Cover is an ambitious covers project. While kicking out several headbangers—including a chunky rendition of Sabbath’s “Neon Knights,” in which Geoff Tate channels Dio’s operatic flights—they also push into prog rock, Woodstock anthems, and New Wave. Ratcheting up the paranoia of Pink Floyd’s original, their version of “Welcome to the Machine” oozes the same dystopian metal vibe as their album Operation: Mindcrime, and the titanic “Bullet the Blue Sky” transforms U2’s indictment of American imperialism into pounding hard rock.
