Actor, musician, model—Jaden Smith isn't your average artist. So it should come as no surprise that the first take of SYRE, Jaden’s 2017 debut album, would not be enough to satisfy his restlessly creative spirit. As such, SYRE: THE ELECTRIC ALBUM is a moody, guitar-driven makeover in which Smith transforms five SYRE tracks from trap-based hip-hop into more emo-based tunes (think: Lil Peep and Princess Nokia). He taps new reservoirs of feeling and atmosphere on “Lost Boy” and “Fallen,” while the tail end of “Ninety” almost has a campfire vibe to it. “Icon?,” meanwhile, drifts on a cloud as Smith rejects the labels thrust on him with a punchy freestyle.
