In an era where artists are more manufactured than ever, it is refreshing to both hear and see someone who knew where they wanted to go and stuck to that plan - this album is the result of years of hard work, genuineness, and sincerity - and it has clearly paid off. The outcome is [without question] one of the best albums of 2010. Miguel is authentic, extremely talented (as a writer, vocalist, and performer) and the album is exceptional from the first song to the last. It is rather short in duration; however, the length is to the benefit of the listener (in that, you wish to listen to it again and again). Even the sequencing should be commended (i.e. beginning the album with one of Miguel's most popular records "Sure Thing"). Transitioning seamlessly from interludes ["Girl With The Tattoo Enter.lewd" which also greatly showcases Miguel's vocals and range a cappella] into a song such as "Pay Me" certainly took the latter track to a higher level for me personally than it once was held. "Teach Me" is an incredibly well written record with a strong hint/influence of Prince, and "My Piece" is ridiculous with its concept, production, vocal arrangement; Biggie influenced chant (untouchable, uncrushable), and infectious hook. I would have liked to see "Go" on the album and "Overload" make the cut in its entirety, but if you know of Miguel, you probably already have those specific records in your collection. In the end, I have to say that this is one of the most solid albums that I have heard in years - so much so that it is difficult to pick a favorite song (and there are definitely no tracks to skip - a rarity in music presently). Almost anyone can relate in some way, shape, or form to his lyrics with them being so personal and relatable that, whether male or female, you will definitely listen thinking that you may have even wrote a song or two yourself. They truly and simply do not make many albums like this anymore. Here is to years of great music to come from Miguel. This is certainly only just the beginning.
