Subject: Matter - EP

Extremely popular with the uber-indie set, Homeboy Sandman emerged in 2007 with his debut EP, Nourishment. Rocking a flow that often dispenses with standard rap formatting, (i.e., hooks and choruses), the former New York City schoolteacher soon found himself in underground hip-hop's precarious “next big thing” spot. Over the next few years his profile kept rising, thanks to several well-received albums (including Actual Factual Pterodactyl and The Good Son). On Subject: Matter, he connects with the forward-thinking label Stones Throw, dropping six new tracks that showcase his offbeat flow and relatable storytelling lyricism. There’s unorthodox but smooth production from Ben Grymm, The Audible Doctor, and Jonwayne, among others. The songs here address his humble belongings ("Mine All Mine"), BX girls ("Sweet Emotion"), and a big flood that cleans up the Earth ("Soap"). The highlight may be "Unforgettable," a heartfelt love/lust jam about that one girl better than all the rest.
