What could have been

This album could have been on par with Soilworks opus "The living Infinite." The last album that these guys released was 6 years ago, so they had a lot of time to work on it. Musically, this album is awesome. Intricate, beautiful lead guitar melodies mixed with heavy, thrash laden rhythm guitars set the stage for a melodic death metal fan's dream. The vocals are spot on if you enjoy this band or Soilwork, and the drums are great. The problem with the album comes in the form of the production and the mix. The guitars get muddied together, and the crisp sound that fans of the band are accustomed to sounds drowned out. The volume balance on the instruments just sounds off, and it often results in music that is hard to discern. That is a shame, because the riffs are memorable and really catchy. I find myself wanting to turn up the lead guitars at times and tone down the rhythm guitars and vocals at the same time because they just get in each others way! At times, it sounds like my Bose sound system is going to explode, and I have the same problem on my Alpine car system, which tells me that it is not the sound system, but the mix. It reminds me a lot of what people encountered with Metallica's "Death Magnetic" album, which was an awesome return to form that was brought down by such horrible production that there was a petition to re-record the album that garnered 10's of thousands of signatures. Basically the music on "Cold Inferno" is downright great, BUT it is just too distorted and hard to sort out at times, which makes it frustrating to listen to. That's a shame, because it really is a solid album that I recommend buying immediately. Who knows, maybe this is an MP3 compression problem, and the album will sound better on CD? In any case, don't deprive yourself of buying this album, but go into listening to it with the knowledge that there are some audio challenges that your ears will have to overcome to fully appreciate the genius behind the music.
