EDITORS’ NOTES

Known for helping craft standout tracks—including “Drunk in Love”—on Beyoncé’s self-titled 2013 album, producer and multi-instrumentalist Boots (né Jordan Asher) showcases the range of his talents on this slinky, sinister debut. Equal parts minimal R&B and grimy trip-hop, the tracks rise from frenetic, scuffling percussion and hypnotic, blissed-out beats. Asher layers those with stream-of-consciousness speak-singing: On “Oraclies” and “Dead Come Running,” ominous visions hover atop staggering backbeats; on mellower cuts like “Only” and “Still,” his murmured melodies hint at something sweeter.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics. Apple Digital Master

Aquaria gets into your brain

Boots is known as a hip hop producer, but my first experience was his song I Run Roulette, which sounds more like Nine Inch Nails than hip hop. It blew me away. The incredible sounds he brings together with a driving beat was unlike anything I’ve heard before. I preordered AQUARIA and downloaded the preview songs C.U.R.E., Bombs Away and AQUARIA. These became my soundtrack for morning runs on a work trip to San Diego and Santa Monica. Running to this music in the dark, in a foreign city is like a dystopian haunted house ride.

It Takes A Few Listens To Appreciate

I listened to the available songs and can conclude that this album is unique. The singer's voice is monotoned, but the background electronic music is enjoyable. I wouldn't listen to this for lyrical value, but I'd listen to this while studying or going on a walk.
