In the tradition of 2010’s Just Across the River, Still Within the Sound of My Voice partners Jimmy Webb’s songs and voice with an illustrious list of duet guests, from Lyle Lovett, Carly Simon, and Elvis’ backup singers The Jordanaires (for the appropriate “Elvis & Me”) to Kris Kristofferson, Brian Wilson, and Art Garfunkel. Webb writes songs across genre lines, capturing an artful musical eclecticism and a spiritual depth in which other singers (Glen Campbell especially) have been able to find their voice. This follow-up collection includes a lush version with Keith Urban on “Where’s the Playground, Susie” and a touching version of “Honey Come Back,” where a gravel-voiced Kris Kristofferson narrates while Webb shields him from the tougher notes. Webb brings Brian Wilson in for the backing vocals on the extended piece and jam of “Macarthur Park.” David Crosby and Graham Nash bring their sense of harmony to “If These Walls Could Speak.”
