Steady Love

Steady Love

Maria Muldaur puts aside acoustic jugband sounds and goes for a mix of New Orleans funk and gospel fervor on Steady Love. Recorded (mostly) in the Crescent City under the guidance of keyboardist Dave Torkanowsky, these tracks reconcile the sensual and the spiritual without strain, giving Muldaur’s vocals full range to tease and smolder. The tune selection freely blends ‘60s-era R&B (“Soulful Dress”), horn-accented Memphis soul (the title track), smoky blues (“Rain Down Tears”) and sultry, jazz-tinged numbers (“Please Send Somebody to Love”). Muldaur rides the slip-sliding groove of “Why Are People Like That?” with sardonic glee, turning the song into a timely comment on human nature. At the other extreme, she celebrates the Christian life in “Walk by Faith” and offers a powerful testimony of belief in “I Am Not Alone” (featuring composer Rick Vito’s stinging slide guitar). By turns earthy and exalted, Steady Love is a tribute to New Orleans traditions and a reaffirmation of Muldaur’s still-vital talents.
