EDITORS’ NOTES

Wilco dropped their coyly titled ninth album as a free-download surprise, but even more unexpected is just how loose it all sounds. The long-running band unwind with a warm set of shaggy, psych-tinged indie rock. It’s a bountiful feast for guitar lovers, from the pervasive growling distortion to Nels Cline’s prickly riffage. Jeff Tweedy taps a renewed drollness in the lyrics for “Random Name Generator” and especially “The Joke Explained,” while teasing a disheveled stoner edge on “Cold Slope” and the overdriven, falsetto-licked “Pickled Ginger.”

Trust me, it's a real new record

When I first saw this I thought, 'Uh oh, experimental crap released for free because they felt guilty selling it.' Well, that's wrong! This is just as legit a record as the last few, and yes there are some noisy bits, but no more or less than 'Whole Love.' Some of it even feels like an update of the 'Ghost' era. Go for it - you lose nothing.

A loud, noisy, melodic, welcome return

It's been a long time between Wilco records. 2011's The Whole Love was great, but this, this is remarkable. Dissonant, beautifully executed, and there's space for us as listeners to get lost. A 34 minute journey. I've had it since around 8, and haven't stopped listening. Thanks, Wilco.

Awesome

It's Wilco, it's a great album, and it's free. What is there not to like? Also, "Magnetized" may be Wilco's best song in years.
