On her sprawling third studio album Spiral, Canadian producer Isabelle Rezazadeh digs deeper into her signature dark and dubby sound. Here, everything feels haunted and elastic, like it’s being reflected in a funhouse mirror: Squelching bass wobbles billow and balloon (“Chemical Bond”), vocals get pitched up and warped into abstractions (“Time”), and stuttering tick-tocks and click-clacks vibrate against each other until they explode into a disorienting fizz (“Spun”). Although her canvas is instantly recognizable—few others have mastered the art of lumbering, midtempo techno like Rezz—you get the sense that she’s stretched it to its physical limits, an attempt to see how far down the rabbit hole she can take us. “Vortex” makes a strong case for trippiest track: A rollercoaster of grinding, mechanical textures and woodwind synths built over hypnotic, head-bobbing dubstep, it’s the sort of dramatic, deep-in-the-rave cut that slips in and out of focus.
