Speak a Little Louder (Deluxe Edition)

Diane Birch

Speak a Little Louder (Deluxe Edition)

Four years after her debut album, Bible Belt (largely Laurel Canyon folk meets ‘70s retro-soul), New York City singer/songwriter Diane Birch returns with the revealing Speak a Little Louder. Working with a number of prestigious producers, she immensely expands her stylistic reach. Steve Greenberg returned, but Dap-Kings drummer Homer Steinweiss oversaw the majority of these sessions, which took place at seven studios. E.G. White, Questlove, and Matt Hales add their touches where necessary. The grooves of “Love and War” and the marshaled vocals of “Frozen Over” make it clear that Birch isn't a simple craftsman but a forward-thinking performer who works at any level she chooses. The deceptive broken-heart track “All the Love You Got” isn’t the sound of a woman giving up, but of one twisting the knife as she wonders if her former lover's next lover knows “that’s all the love you got.” Ouch. The deluxe version adds five bonus tracks and an 18-page booklet.
