Boris Brejcha likes to call his music “high-tech minimal”—a term that may have made more sense back around the time of early albums like 2010’s My Name Is, whose rolling basslines and pinpoint percussion further weaponized the era’s laser-focused club sounds. Ten years later, that designation barely begins to capture the maximalist impact of the German DJ/producer’s big-room epics. His approach is the same as ever: locate a groove and home in on it with unrelenting intensity. But the synths are fatter, the drums bigger, and the payoff even more satisfying. Opener “Gravity” nods to classic trance in its twinkling piano melody and chugging bass; the eerie vocoder of “Happinezz” flashes back to early-2000s Berlin techno; “Future” folds in Italo disco and piano house. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s as though Brejcha had fused together the best bits from multiple decades of dance music into one all-powerful amalgam.
