10 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

The second studio album from the U.K. shoegaze group Slowdive is highlighted by two collaborations with Brian Eno, who cowrote "Sing" and added synthesizer to it and "Here She Comes." He provides extra ambience that's perfectly in step with the band's ethereal approach. Eno's Music for Airports is an important building block for most shoegaze groups, and the opportunity to work with the chief architect of random and innovative pop music couldn't be passed up. Elsewhere, the band builds on the atmospheric dream pop of its debut (Just for a Day) with tracks that feature both accessibility and a feeling of being transported to another reality. "Alison" centers on Neil Halstead's gentle vocals and shape-shifting guitars, which approximate the beauty of a lava lamp. "Machine Gun," "When the Sun Hits," and "Melon Yellow" further explore the ghostly vibe and subtle grace of the group's ingenious attack. It should be noted that this is the British edition of the album.
