Spanish Gold are the indie trio of drummer Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket), guitarist Adrian Quesada (ex–Grupo Fantasma), and guitarist/vocalist Dante Schwebel (City and Colour, ex-Hacienda). Their debut album, South of Nowhere, was produced by the trio and Collin Dupuis (JEFF the Brotherhood) at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville and at Lalaland in Louisville, Ky. Spanish Gold's sound is clearly influenced by the staccato blues and retro-soul of The Black Keys, with many of the same production hallmarks making appearances on “One Track Mind,” the title track, and “Movin On,” for starters. The split-octave vocals of “Day Drinkin” add to the track's lazy, relaxed feel, while the layered vocals and buzzy synths of “Out on the Street” yield a modern soul vibe. “Lonely Ride” and “Reach for Me” are relatively straightforward ‘60s-influenced rock. For “Stay with Me,” the album’s final track, the vocals go underwater for a psychedelic counterpoint to the band’s country-rock basics.
