21 Songs, 2 Hours 33 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

On this vast triple album from Finnish doom metal lords Swallow the Sun, each side represents a journey through specific realms of atmospheric metal, intense prog, and melodic doom. I swings from the thundering churn of “10 Silver Bullets” to the space opera of “Heartstrings Shattering,” while the acoustic II evokes a contemplative soundscape, with “Songs from the North” the aching centerpiece. III makes for a furiously bleak finish, with “The Gathering of the Black Moths” announcing the band’s punishing vision.

Swallow the Sun x3

My favorite doom band hands down. They gave me three great albums at once. What more could I ask for, except for them to go on tour and come to my town?

Gloom, Beauty & Despair Done Right

I : Majestic, The melodies here are some of the best from StS. Exploring atmosphere and emotions.
II : Ethereal, A more stripped down StS focusing on beautiful acoustics and vocals.
III : Crushing, Some of the deepest darkest material they have written. Your soul will be consumed.
A triple album masterpiece that needs to be in your death/doom collection! Try not to cry...

Absolutely perfect

Swallow The Sun has crafted a simply incredible masterpiece with Songs from the North. It's heavy, doomy, ambient, and beautiful. The triple release album is extremely ambitious and they do a marvelous job with it. Each section approaches their sound from a different perspective. Section 1 is their signature melodic doom metal sound. Section two approaches their sound from a completely acoustic/post-rock sound. Section 3 is brutal funeral doom. All three are distinct yet sound very cohesive as a whole album. I cannot say enough good things about this album, and this band as a whole. This is easily one of my all-time favorite albums. 10/10
