Something Like Fiction: The Lost Albums

Released not long after the band’s December 2012 breakup, Wavorly’s Something Like Fiction: The Lost Albums assembles 22 previously unreleased demos and b-sides from the Mississippi quintet’s seven-year career. From the start, Wavorly was a diverse proposition, blending punk and pop elements with a Christian lyrical focus. This collection includes everything from early tunes like the brash, dynamically volatile “Well, You’ve Got My Attention” (written when the group was still called Freshmen 15) to late-period compositions like the jangly, British rock–influenced “If Only You Were Mine.” In between is a wildly varied, often fascinating grab bag of tunes, held together by Dave Stovall’s earnest lead vocals and Seth Farmer’s smooth-to-crunchy guitar riffage. “Barely Breathe” (a seething rocker describing a crisis of faith), “Chasing After Love” (built around an uplifting keyboard line), “Miracle” (a prayerful acoustic piece), and “Confirmation Brings Sleep” (filled with slicing guitars and gang vocals) are among the high points here.
