Solomon Diaries Vol. I (feat. Nathan Koci)

On the first volume of a three-part series, clarinetist Sam Sadigursky partners with accordionist Nathan Koci for a set of music inspired by the abandoned landscape of the Borscht Belt. Marisa Scheinfeld’s poignant photographs were the initial catalyst: images of dilapidated resort hotels and venues once popular with Jews in and around New York’s Catskill Mountains tell a poignant story of a bygone era. Sadigursky and Koci evoke it all with music, summoning a rich and full sound. But it isn’t simply mood music: There’s much virtuosity on display from both partners, and the music is often rhythmically challenging. Fragments of field recordings complete the atmosphere: Ruth Rubin tearing it up in Yiddish on “Nevele,” unidentified male group vocals on “Glass Houses” adding to the piece’s intensity, an interview with Anita Garlick during “Revolution Room” as she explains how the Borscht Belt arose in response to anti-Jewish discrimination. The journey ends with a spoken-word narrative drawn from Reuben Wallenrod’s 1957 book, Dusk in the Catskills.
