13 Songs, 52 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

For Sing It Loud, k.d. lang is working with a self-contained group that gives her a new consistency of sound. Recorded in Nashville, the album leans towards country music but with an artsy-touch that’s in line with her earlier records in spirit and alt-country and adult-contemporary in sound. She’s what we might expect Patsy Cline, one of her heroes, to sound like in the 21st century. “The Water’s Edge” is fully mature. Her voice takes off for the heavens and the tremolo guitar gives the song a vaguely sinister, retro vibe. “Perfect World” sounds like it was written for Chris Isaak and then reeled back in for lang, who, with a pedal steel guitar haunting her from behind, turns the song into one of her finest in years. The cover of Talking Heads’ ‘Heaven” is virtually unrecognizable, transformed into a song of desert isolation. “Sugar Buzz” aches with lang’s trademark sensuality. The Deluxe Version includes three bonus cuts, the quick-stepping “I Am the Winner,” the loping C&W “Hollywood Kids” and the truly remarkable “Hungry Bird” that’s as dark and mysterious as a David Lynch film.

BEST ALBUM EVER

What this album, recorded with a real band for the first time since her early days with the Reclines (ANGEL WITH A LARIAT), manages to do is, combine an almost live, rock 'n roll vibe and edge with the polish, songwriting craftsmanship, and expert vocals of arguably her biggest success, 1992's INGENUE. For me,
SING IT LOUD, recorded with the Sis Boom Bang band, is, to my ears, the highlight of her stellar recording career. I defy anyone to find a bad track on this, and several ("I Confess," "Sugar Buzz," "Habit Of Mind," "Sorrow Nevermore," and even two of the bonus tracks here, "Hollywood Kids" and "Hungry Bird") are as good as anything she's ever done.
The raw, echoey rock band backing on "I Confess" and, in particular, "Sugar Buzz" (which sounds like some long lost unreleased Rolling Stones gem) give this album a grit that is decidedly lacking on almost all lang's work since "Ingenue." What's brilliant about the arrangements, however, is the band, although it's presence is felt on many of the tracks, never competes with or drowns out lang's incredible instrument, which is allowed to take it's rightful place on center stage. As great a singer as lang is, there is an added feeling of soul and emotion on many of the tracks which, in the past, was wiped out by slick production and arrangements. Here, her vocals, in many cases, are allowed to breathe, showing a vulnerablility and nakedness that, as good as her past work has been, has been missing a good portion of the time.
Of course, it also helps that the material is top notch. lang has co-written all the tracks (save the Talking Heads' cover, "Heaven") with Nashville songwriter Joe Pisapia. None of the songs fall flat. All are good. Many soar.
lang, after 25 years on the music scene, is not only still making great records. She just have made her best one yet.

Another Great Record

What the studio did for Ingenue, The Siss Boom Bang has done for Sing it Loud. I have been listening to this for over a year now and still can't get enough of it. Truly Gorgeous!

Amazing

I have been listening to k.d from the beginning of her record career and all of her music has been great. She is by far the greatest vocalist around & this album is rich and deep. Thank you so much for making music.
