A Beautifully Themed, Much Needed Album

I very rarely take time to write album reviews, no matter how masterful or moving it may be. In fact, the last album I reviewed on iTunes was Brendan James' self-titled sophomore release nearly three years ago. However, "Simplify" is one of those productions that leaves a mark with listeners by chronicling the palpable growth of an already preeminent artist. There is a timelessness to this album that has become lost in a lot of today's music. I have been fortunate enough to have owned this album for nearly two months; a reward for donating to Brendan's Kickstarter campaign preceding this release. I immediately knew from my first experience listening to it from the beginning track, "Windblown," that this would be his finest work to date. Each song offers a refreshingly organic vibe that optimally complements James' superb vocals and introspective lyrics. I was able to see him perform in concert twice last year while promoting his previous album, "Hope In Transition." He played two songs featured on this release that left me stunned: "The Skeptic" and "Constellations." Amazingly, the entire album contains pieces that are just as wonderfully composed. If I had to select a track that I love most, it would be "The Good In You." It is a simply written, soulful, heartfelt, organic number that beautifully showcases Brendan's undeniable growth as a vocalist as well as a songwriter. One song that was excluded from the prerelease copy is the bonus track, "Counting Hours." This is a piece he wrote around the time of his debut album, but I am glad that he waited until "Simplify" to record it. It flawlessly ties into the message of the title track urging people to be aware and observant and not lose our identity to materialism and external distractions. Although this is his fifth album, I believe this to be his 'signature' release. It is the one that I am positive I will be listening to for years down the road with unwavering appreciation for such a remarkable talent. Thank you, Brendan James, for unfailingly creating and sharing music that is so evidently made with love, honesty, and optimism.

Brendan James has done it again.

This is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Not only are James' melodies in some moments catchy, and in others moving, his lyrics are what truly make this album a masterpiece. James' songwriting is honest and powerful, and he never fails to capture exactly what I feel into song. Thank Brendan James for sharing your talents with us, and may your career continure to flourish.
