Previously a fine and instinctive interpreter of the music of fellow Norwegian Edvard Grieg, Leif Ove Andsnes turns to music by another great Nordic composer—Finland’s Jean Sibelius. Though a violinist, Sibelius left a substantial body of piano music, much of it still little known. Andsnes responds to its evident passion and plays this beautiful music with palpable love. The Sonatina No. 1, quite classical in style, is a charmer, while Andsnes does the substantial Kyllikki—once championed by Glenn Gould—with enormous conviction.
