Everything's Coming Up Roses

Night Terrors of 1927 are a partnership between ex–Rilo Kiley guitarist Blake Sennett and Jarrod Gorbel, erstwhile singer for folk-rockers The Honorary Title. But this joint venture owes little to either member's past. In place of the contemplative songwriting of their former bands, the duo's debut is a synth-heavy, cinematic soundscape—the kind of thing that's ideal for late-night drives through the streets of L.A., which the pair call home. From "Dust and Bones" to the Tegan & Sara–assisted "When You Were Mine,” the album’s soaring, larger-than-life melodies overflow with a righteous mix of heart-on-sleeve emotion and perfect popcraft.
