17 Songs, 1 Hour

EDITORS’ NOTES

Name-checking a host of other female pop stars, Lily Allen opens her third album with a plainspoken demand: “Gimme that crown… I wanna be Sheezus.” The charts would have a lot more moxie under Allen’s reign—Sheezus is brimming with sarcastic one-liners and quick-witted feminist jabs. Produced largely by GRAMMY®-winning songwriter Greg Kurstin (Foster the People, Ellie Goulding), Allen’s songs can be playfully sweet (the sweeping “Air Balloon” and the bubbling “L8 CMMR”), sardonic (the midtempo highlight “Our Time”), or downright salty (the anti-misogyny tirade of “Hard out Here”). But it’s the songwriter’s whip-smart intelligence that gives the big hooks of Sheezus lasting substance.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

The world is better with Lily Allen

It wasn’t like Lily Allen just ran out of things that she wanted to say. I don’t think that’s possible. No, she took a break from modern music to have a family and turn into an adult. And meanwhile, the music world just kept ticking on.

It has to be said that it’s just so refreshing to have music that actually has something to say again. You won’t find ghost writers here. What you will find is the kind of social commentary that the world needs right now. Music that you can dance to but also brings up significant questions.

Im glad Lily is back. Speaking for myself, I need it.

Sorry Lily, it's not good.

Just listened to the whole album. Besides a few mildly decent songs there's nothing much here. I realized this album would be different than the last 2 but this one is not my flavor at all. Hopefully the next album gets it right. I would still marry you Lily we would never play this album on the home stereo though.

This Is Bad

I love Lily's prior albums, but these songs are overly processed. She had an edge and style to her work both lyrically and musically. These three songs are very unappealing, they sound too sugary; I think she mailed it in.
