Scary Fragile

Scary Fragile

Six years after the release of her debut album, Butterfly Boucher returns with an altogether satisfying follow-up, 2009’s Scary Fragile where the Australian-born singer/songwriter again shows her fluent touch as a composer and multi-instrumentalist. Boucher excels at grabbing the listener from the first note and the choppy guitar attack of “I Found Out” and growling bass thrust of “Keeper” are examples of her sure instinct for hooks. Tracks like “For the Love of Love,” “Bright Red” and “Keeping Warm” are intricate pop creations that manage to stay uncluttered amidst their shifting rhythms and spiky dynamics. The emotional range of the album is impressive, stretching from the confrontational angst of “Just One Tear” to the nervous hope of “You Say You Grow” and the subdued melancholy of “A Bitter Song.” Two tracks demand special notice: the ominous, self-revealing title tune and the slinky, soulful “Gun for a Tongue.” More than boasting a bright, infectious sound, Scary Fragile has real substance and heart in its grooves.
