Dull and repetitive

Every time DevilDriver drops a new album, I am excited, but since Pray for Villains, the albums have been overloaded with sound-alike, play-fast-and-scream-a-lot songs. This band has really lost the groove and haunting melody its first few albums had, and now it just sounds generic and derivative. The only song here that has any uniqueness is "Sail."

Same old stuff.

Thank god for Mike Spreitzer. Without him, this band would have burnt out long ago. Dez's lyrics are so cliche when it comes to heavy metal. This band has become such a try hard death metal band and has completely gotten away from what got them popular in the first place. Beast was a complete disappointment. I fear this will be the same. Oh well, I'll still buy it.

They Still Got It

DevilDriver has been top notch since they entered the scene. They have remained consistently brutal and have stayed very true to their roots. Each new album, on first listen, is a lot to take in. I'm not sure what it is about records like this but it takes several listens before the tracks really sink in, and that's when I really start to love it. This album is no exception. It's not that I think DD can do no wrong, it's just that they haven't yet. From the lyrics to the song structure, they are solid as ever. There's a few new surprises and just a small amount of progressive influence, especially on 'Sail'. One of the great things about DevilDriver is that they don't try to reinvent the wheel with each album. They balance the new with the familiar and bring us albums that we can enjoy until the next one comes out. I never get tired of my DD collection. Tracks like 'Desperate Times' remind me again why I love this band so much. It's hard to pull off heavy AND catchy, but they do it, time and time again. For fans of DevilDriver, this album will NOT disappoint, and if you're like me, it will take a few listens before this album works its way under your skin.
