Fresh and funny!

Erica Rhodes is just so FUN. She’s upbeat and quirky and yet somehow also deep. With her observational comedy, she talks about relationships, aging (well, being in your 30s if that counts), cellphones, parents, and even grammar. She’s fresh and funny. Highly recommend!

Witty material, spot-on delivery and perfect timing

Erica Rhodes’ Sad Lemon is funny, smart and features some of the best examples of comic timing that I’ve heard in a while.

Scanning through the set list, I saw some track titles like “Voice Work” and “Friend-Zoning” and admit my guilt in thinking “Bits Women Comics Have To Do ” (seriously, does Bobby Slayton or Lewis Black ever get asked to do a bit about why they sound the way they do?) but I am happy to report Rhodes’ take on these standards are fresh, witty, and fun. Hysterical, at times darkly so, her timing and delivery are showcased throughout the set. Her perfect pause placement in “But He Likes You” leads the audience through the joke if they aren’t grammar ninjas, and even if you think you can see where the joke is going (“I was sober for 15 years...”) her delivery sells it and you can’t help but laugh.

One of the cool things about this album is that it was done in a club, which gave Rhodes the chance to do something I miss in other albums recorded in larger theaters- crowd work. To me as a comedy nerd, I always think that crowd work is a litmus test for a comic- you never know what you’re going to get, and you have to turn whatever it is into something funny (but not insulting) on the spot. It has to be one of the riskier things a stand-up can try, and Rhodes has fun with it, making the audience members who she engaged with feel like they were a part of the set, while at the same time making everyone laugh. You know that couple is going to be telling the story to all their friends at parties for years to come.

Enough of my prattling. Buy the album- it’s great. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go get a headboard.
