Easy to Get Behind this Album

Renowned guitarist/composer Charlie Hunter's new duo recording with drummer Scott Amendola, is an album that's easy to get behind. A complete departure from his last two albums, Not Getting behind Is The New Getting Ahead is Hunter's first recording of original compositions in three years.  Hunter explains that their intention was to tell stories around the central theme of the album’s title.  Hunter says, “The new tunes are meant to evoke some of the things you might see in your travels through the USA these days. Scott and I wanted to think of each composition as a starting point for some kind of narrative."

"It’s the story of today", Hunter reveals to Pollstar. "How slowly, slowly an entire society … or 99 percent of that society’s mentality shifts from this kind of attitude of 'The American Dream' to 'Not getting behind is the new getting ahead.' I spent 25 years driving around this country playing every nook and cranny in it. A part of me feels like maybe a pretty decent reflection, or reflector, of that. The songs are kind of about that without really getting political. It’s not meant as a political statement. It’s just meant as a reflection".

“The album's ten tracks were recorded with both Hunter and Amendola playing in the same room simultaneously, with no headphones, and there's no mixing, editing, or overdubs. Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead was recorded straight to two-track analog 1/4-inch tape by lauded sound engineer Dave McNair.” – JamBase
