‘If Love’s Alive, Then Love Can Die’

This wistful, bittersweet record breaks my heart but also heals it at the same time. Love his deep voice, literate lyrics and soulful performance … I’m not sure if you would classify it as alt-country, folk, singer-songwriter Americana or what, but Rodeo will have a “Soft Place to Land” between my Jim Bianco and Tom Waits collections (yes, I alphabetize). If you are a Waits fan like me, listen to the song “Rodeo” first. It is wholly original, but you can hear the quirky influence of Tom in its weirdness and wonder. “She Lives in Me” is one of the most moving love songs I’ve ever heard, stark and lovely. In general, he sings a lot about loss, but it is the listener’s gain.
