Guernsey-born singer-songwriter Robyn Sherwell's debut album is British electro-soul at its most sophisticated. Her understated voice has an uncanny power, as she sings of guilty hearts (“Pale Lung”) and feeling too ambitious for your remote hometown (“Islander”). There are heavy piano parts and tender vocal melodies, but Sherwell's sense of drama sets her apart from your average balladeer: “No News” sounds like she's summoning a storm and the slippery, computerised harmonies of “Low” are cutting-edge, but moving. She even daringly makes over Fleetwood Mac's “Landslide” as a lonely electro ballad and pulls it off admirably.
