EDITORS’ NOTES

This debut by the aptly named The Head and the Heart is a solid showcase for the band’s easy, earthy Americana-pop sound that taps into both body parts with the familiar touch of an old friend. The carefree “Cats and Dogs” opens things up, like a rope swing on a summer day: The theme of wandering roots is further explored in the gorgeous “Down in the Valley,” which uses a lithe violin and a beautifully nostalgia-laced vocal melody to sculpt a palpable longing.

Joy Will Find A Way

In a world over-saturated with music, over-burdened with grief and torn by human division and alienation, it is heartening to find that a group of kids can still come together with nothing but talent and tenacity and, leaning on each other's strengths, create something as joyful as this album. I suppose somewhere anger, angst and rage have their rightful place. And in dark times, dark things can seem comfortable. But one of the greatest strengths music has is its ability to give joy -- or maybe to to coax the joy that is in us natively to come out and play. This music is not naive, despite the youth of the players. But even as it stares into the face of sober reality, it can't seem to resist the urge to dance. And what's wrong with that?

Best New Artist of 2010

Are there even words to describe how musically talented these people are? This has never happened for me before, but I love EVERY SINGLE TRACK on this album! That is unheard of in this age of untalented auto-tuned pop stars who only get where they are because of the people they know. Now, I'm not saying their music is bad, because it's actually very catchy, but I AM saying that this music will last through the generations and never grow old. This is the music that I will show my kids and be proud of! Super Amazing quality! I hope they come tour to California soon!
