12 Songs, 51 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Blurring pianos, synth, and bass until the beats resemble a surreal dream, Lushlife colors rap tracks like a painter on Ritualize. “Toynbee Suite,” the album’s centerpiece, is a 10-minute epic featuring a chamber orchestra and Lushlife’s rhymes about the mysterious tile art in his native Philadelphia. The rapper/producer also invites guests like Killer Mike, featured on “This Ecstatic Cult,” to cut through the haze of sounds with his hard-edged raps. But it’s Lushlife’s chimerical melodies and fanciful themes that distinguish this avant-garde hip-hop suite.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

Amazing music! ,

Few rappers I love and respect

Lushlife along with E&A and Gang Starr are by far the best rappers in the industry. This album is pure gold.

Spectacular, jaw-dropping

By far the best album of 2016 right here, and possibly the best hip-hop album of the past decade. Incredibly substantial and melodic with a pound of passion. El-P and Kanye now have something to chase; it doesn’t get better than this. Really.
