10 Songs, 30 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Retribution Gospel Choir serves as an alter-ego for Low’s Alan Sparhawk. Where his established group delivers slow, haunting, often ethereal, otherworldly meditations, Retribution Gospel Choir turns up the amplifiers and provides Sparhawk with an outlet for his aggressive side. Produced by Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek, the album centers around thick, trudging guitar tones and an emphasis on the inner workings of this trio’s dynamic chemistry. Drummer Eric Pollard may not be Keith Moon, but he’s unafraid to let loose with canonistic drum rolls that fire things from behind. Yet, Sparhawk never loses the pop thread either. “Take Your Time” plays it dirty, but Sparkhawk’s vocals reach for the skies, with a hummable melody that rises in exultation as the pressure mounts. “Breaker” and ”Somebody’s Someone” feature solid harmonies and hair-raising guitar leads that resemble what Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young might have sounded like if Young had held all of the cards. At only 30 minutes, RGC features no extended jams or self-indulgence, just quick, pure energetic tunes
