Resuscitation

Resuscitation

More than just a long-overdue reissue, Ghostly’s expanded edition of Resuscitation completely rethinks Adult.’s role in electro-pop music over the past decade. Somewhat like Crystal Castles with a faint glimmer of hope or Kraftwerk with a dead-eyed fembot calling the shots upfront, the Detroit-based duo’s early singles imagine a dystopian world where the furniture’s as cold as everyone’s emotions and Hollywood endings cease to exist. And yet it remains remarkably catchy and compelling, from the well-oiled melodies of “Human Wreck” to the liquefied loops of “Your Lies.” It’s as if the married couple at the center of Adult.—like The Normal, Gary Numan, and Glenn Danzig before them—set out to make the sonic equivalent of J.G. Ballard’s controversial novel Crash, a love story in which the characters never quite kiss. They instead get “sideswiped,” leaving in their wake crumpled keyboards and a crime scene you simply can’t look away from.
