After proving themselves the most rhythmically dextrous band in the post-hardcore underground, Fugazi became the most fearlessly eclectic with Red Medicine. While fierce strikes like “Bed for the Scraping” satisfy their circle-pit base, “Do You Like Me?” sculpts distorted musique concrète into kinetic garage rock. “Combination Lock” is an irreverent mutant-funk strut, and the tunefully despairing “Forensic Scene” practically counts as a ballad. Although dub had always been in the band’s DNA, they fully embrace its freak-out potential on the stalking instrumental “Version.”
