Real Life / Real Worship

Real Life / Real Worship

Anthony Evans’ career as a gospel artist had already been on the rise when he grabbed the attention of Christina Aguilera on Season 2 of The Voice. Though he didn’t take top honors on that show, Real Life/Real Worship finds him continuing to advance as a singer and worship leader. Teaming up with 22-year-old producer Max Stark and cowriting with such Christian music notables as Martha Munizzi, Cindy Morgan, and Krissy Nordhoff, Evans frames his message of hope and redemption in ways that reach out to the unchurched as well as committed believers. The insistent synthesizers of “Never Fail” and the exuberant clap-along beat of “Greater Is He” help lift the album beyond the comfort zone of typical gospel into more progressive pop realms. “Something Beautiful” and “I Found You” offer soaring praise to pulsating techno grooves. More traditional are the hymn-like testimonies “Ask” (based on Matthew 7:7) and “Mercy Tree” (a heartfelt account of the Crucifixion). Throughout, Evans’ supple vocals combine earthly passion with exalted faith, making this album ripe for crossover success.
