Alessia Cara’s debut single “Here” was 2015’s anthem for introverts, and it prepped her career for a meteoric liftoff. In the time since, she’s stayed the course, combining her jazzy pop with conversational lyrics to produce a catalog of autobiographical music. On This Summer, Cara gives the awkwardness of coming into adulthood a nimble pop soundtrack. The misgivings of being in a frustrating relationship are laid over a reggae-pop backbeat on “Ready,” and Cara’s not lending another second of her time to icy personalities on the bouncy “Rooting for You.” She gets cheeky about embracing her confidence on the self-love anthem “Okay Okay,” declaring: “I do it all with ease, I should give lessons.”
