13 Songs, 43 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Ironically, what makes Rainbow Connection one of the greatest children’s country albums ever is that it’s not really a children’s album so much as an all-ages affair. The bulk of the record features down-home takes on kid-friendly songs—from the Muppets classic “Rainbow Connection” to the brain-twisting novelty tune “I’m My Own Grandpaw”—delivered in intimate arrangements and offering plenty of pure, unadulterated Willie. And the “grown-up” tracks toward the album’s end, particularly the two moody Mickey Newbury covers, make maturity’s value pretty plain.
