April 2026 is a good time to be celebrating Luther Vandross. It’s a month that would have marked the R&B legend’s 75th birthday—and which also saw him inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This mix—created by R&B ONLY’s Magic—salutes an unforgettable talent, as it journeys across Vandross’ back catalog and his collaborations with Beyoncé, Change, and Cheryl Lynn. “It was such a distinct pleasure to create this mix honoring Luther Vandross,” Magic tells Apple Music. “I own many of his records, and no matter the scenario, Luther is on my playlist. I’ve always been drawn to the richness and theatricality of his music, and he remains one of my favorite voices to listen to.” This mix, she says, is made as much for longtime fans as newcomers. “[It’s] a musical picture of Luther’s career that shows the wingspan of his artistry through style and impact,” says Magic. “I wanted to show the funkiness of his uptempo songs like ‘Never Too Much,’ the lushness of his ballads like ‘So Amazing,’ as well as his timeless covers, duets, and lasting influence on generations of artists.” Expect, too, Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s 2024 track “luther,” before this mix closes out with the timeless “Superstar / Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do),” from 1983 record Busy Body. “I think it’s one of the most beautiful and theatrical recordings of all time,” says Magic.
