Heart is there; application leaves something to be desired

I've never cared for John Grant's production choices. Here he buries his fantastic lyric work and great songwriting hooks under a 1970's sound that evokes Peter Frampton B-sides meets very early Pink Floyd B-sides. It's a muddy, flat sound that brings neither voice nor guitar nor piano nor drums to the forefront. Go ahead, seek out the man's Tiny Desk Concert from NPR radio, or his live show from Iceland. I'd be surprised to find many of you who don't prefer his straightforward approach of the live shows to almost any of his studio recordings (except the brilliant GMF). The shame of it is, it could have been so easy to take the easy route and make these songs shine by trusting his voice, guitar and songwriting carry the day.
