From Gene Wilder to Johnny Depp, it's impossible not to have an over-the-top take on Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka tale—but Primus' may be the weirdest of all. Featuring a reunited lineup of guitarist Larry Lalonde, drummer Tim Alexander, and madman bassist Les Claypool, this record reflects the 1971 movie's soundtrack like a funhouse mirror. The formerly endearing "Pure Imagination" becomes a teetering carnival ride, while "Golden Ticket" is a twisted march led by Claypool's hammered bass. In Primus' hands, the benevolent chocolatier of "Candy Man" is transformed into a raving Bellevue inmate. Good times.
