15 Songs, 37 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Traditional country has deep roots in gospel, so it’s only natural that neo-trad country hero Alan Jackson would craft a gospel album as commanding as this. His warm baritone is equally well suited for the spiritual and the secular. Blending old-school piano-and-organ-led gospel arrangements with shades of bluegrass and acoustic country, Jackson shows as much reverence for the style as he does for the subject on devotional tunes like the gleeful transcendence anthem “I’ll Fly Away” and the afterlife ode “When We All Get to Heaven.”

loved by classical musician, in Sacred Music.

I was 16 when accepted and given merit scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory of Music back in 1957. I was accepted into an experimental program for a degree in Sacred Music so got to study in their Graduate School of Theology there then. My major was organ and I had always loved the Episcopal Hymns. But now at 72, when my step-father just died and we are selecting music for his memorial service, I heard the melody of the song "Blessed Assurance" as I returned from walking my dog last evening, and found the hymn in one of my hymnals. I sang it to my wife, his daughter, and showed how it was telling his story of his peace in heaven. I searched for a matching vocal/instrumental version of this on iTunes and found it in this album, along with other lovely songs that speak to my heart.

My favorite albums of hymns.

Alan Jackson has a heart for Jesus and it shows through in this entire album. This may be the most beautiful hymn, worship album I've ever heard. What a great way to start the day listening his his velvety smooth voice and worship our creator! You owe it to yourself to at least listen to the clips!
