Practice Makes Paper

Practice Makes Paper

The Vallejo rap godfather’s been at it since you were in diapers—or, as he puts it with far more wit on “Rain on My Parade,” “I’ve been doing this since Khaleesi and dragons was baby lizards.” The sprawling Practice Makes Paper might not be the most focused of E-40’s recent releases, but it’s proof that the rapper can hang with just about anybody, from A-listers like Quavo and A$AP Ferg (on the eerie, twitchy “Chase the Money”) to rapper’s rappers like Sada Baby and Payroll Giovanni (on the Detroit-inspired “I Come From the Game”) to veterans like Scarface and Method Man. Over the double album’s wide range of styles, 40 toys with his charismatic voice and rubbery flow like Silly Putty, reminding you why he’s been a Bay Area legend since the ’80s.
