11 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

When Karin Dreijer Andersson made her first Fever Ray album in 2009, it was a deliberately isolated affair—a world of concrete walls and empty streets. Nearly eight years later, the Fever Ray universe has been flooded with rays of jubilant self-awareness and visceral human connection. Plunge feels free—ecstatically so. The hollowed beats and sparse soundscapes that defined Fever Ray are spiked by tweaky synths (“IDK About You”), labyrinthine builds (“To the Moon and Back”,) and coarse, industrial freneticism (“Falling”). Once fiercely alone, Andersson has awakened—emotionally, sexually, politically. Dazzling, playful, and almost childishly headstrong, Plunge was worth the wait.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

If you were expecting or wanting the previous album I suggest you go listen to that one and enjoy it for what it is, a nearly perfect moment in time, for this is not that album.

I’ve spun this new album 12 times today prior to writing this review. The first time through I wasn’t thrilled. I had to get the sound I was expecting (previous album) out of my mind. I’m not a huge Knife fan and this sounds a bit more like that but it’s Fever Ray through and through.

I can’t give it a total five star rating because there are three tracks that I, despite my persistence, just can’t love. The rest of the album I do and can get behind the evolution of this sound.

What a Comeback!

I have been waiting for this for years. It really came at exactly the right time. Exploding my expectations all the way through.
