Planetary Duality I: Hideous Revelation
Planetary Duality II: A Prophecies Fruition
Planetary Duality is the second release from the youthful and ambitious Californian metal act the Faceless. Like many of their peers on the tiny but influential Sumerian imprint, the Faceless demonstrate a near-encyclopedic knowledge of, and healthy irreverence for, the history of metal and seem to take palpable pleasure in blending seemingly incongruous genre signifiers with one another in order to create perplexing, but undeniably exhilarating displays of musical virtuosity that gleefully plunder from every corner of the highly compartmentalized metal universe. The Faceless boldly combine disparate musical elements, such as the raw-throated growl and pummeling double-bass pedal-blast beats of Death and the highly melodic, often harmonized leads of Iron Maiden to miraculous effect. Additionally, Planetary Duality represents a significant progression from the Faceless’ undeniably accomplished, but somewhat monochromatic debut Alkedama, wisely doing away with the grinding mid-tempo plodders that weighed down that otherwise excellent album.
