Pilgrims & Prodigals

Pilgrims & Prodigals

Known for its holiday albums, PBS specials, and educational work with young musicians, The Annie Moses Band has charted a distinctive course between the classical, folk, and Christian-music worlds for more than a decade. Pilgrims and Prodigals signals a new creative maturity on the part of this all-sibling sextet. Band leader Annie Wolaver has vocals that blend the airy sweetness of Alison Krauss with the theatrical flair of Sarah Brightman as she guides the group through an eclectic mix of original songs, cover tunes, and traditional material. The album’s overarching theme of spiritual pilgrimage and redemption is captured in folk pieces like “Poor Wayfaring Pilgrim” and “Girl of Constant Sorrow,” as well as band compositions like “The Road Well Traveled” and “Progress.” “Blush” and “My Room” contrast innocence with grown-up knowledge to poignant effect. Creative reworkings of “Love Song” and “I Got a Name” (popularized by Elton John and Jim Croce, respectively) take on a fresh sparkle here. Rich arrangements highlighting the Wolavers’ individual talents on violin, guitar, cello, and mandolin lend the album an overall sonic luster that should hold appeal for pop and classical fans alike.
