Incredible Recording ,

A 21st Century Gershwin

This review is from: Piano Music of Ricky Ian Gordon (Audio CD)
I was introduced to the music of Ricky Ian Gordon through a wonderful singer, and immediately fell in love with his compositions. Ricky Ian Gordon should proudly take his place next to such American greats as Gershwin, Bernstein, Barber, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. His compositions, while completely original and distinctive, bear elements of Poulenc, Mompou and Debussy, as well as the aforementioned giants of the American school of composition. These arrangements are a joy and a challenge to play, and his songs translate beautifully into crowd-pleasing virtuoso and tender piano solos. It goes without saying that John Nauman's brilliant musicianship and transcendental technical prowess at the piano bring Gordon's music to life on this recording. His playing is by turns sultry and sensuous, quirky, flashy and brooding. By the end of the recording, I was exhausted, but satisfied - it is a work of pure genius from both composer and pianist. This recording is a must-have for any fan of piano music, Broadway music, 20th century American and French music - or quite simply, really good music!
