Peter, Paul and Mommy

Peter, Paul and Mommy

After nearly a decade of Civil Rights and antiwar activism, Peter, Paul and Mary turned their concerns closer to home with 1969’s Peter, Paul and Mommy. This effervescent collection of previously- and newly-recorded children’s songs reflected the trio’s desire to find a message common to all ages. Of course, music with a childhood theme had been a part of their repertoire since “Puff, The Magic Dragon” and “It’s Raining” (both included here). Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers compliment these favorite with a diverse batch of tunes, drawing upon everyone from Gilbert and Sullivan (“I Have A Song To Sing, O!”) to Shel Silverstein (“Boa Constrictor”). Especially fun are PP&M’s renditions of Tom Paxton’s “Going To The Zoo” and “The Marvelous Toy.” The album also includes the radio hit “Day Is Done,” Yarrow’s sing-along call for inter-generational unity. Peter, Paul and Mommy marked the final album by the trio before their seven-year sabbatical from recording. Its intelligent and affectionate approach to kids’ music has made it an enduring family favorite.
