After releasing their self-titled debut in 2014, Crosses seemingly disappeared until the dawn of the next decade, when they slowly began dropping stand-alone singles. Six-song EP PERMANENT.RADIANT is—so far—the apex of that fresh creative burst, and it sees Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno and producer (and former Far guitarist) Shaun Lopez writing as a duo after splitting with bassist Chuck Doom. Though they may be a man down, Crosses haven’t lost a step. All the ethereal atmosphere, fluttering electronics, and ’80s New Wave references that made their previous material so alluring are ramped up in the moody single “Holier,” the infectious leadoff track “Sensation,” and the Depeche Mode-influenced “Vivien,” which also sees Moreno nicking his chorus phrasing from Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time.”
