10 Songs, 48 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Singer-guitarist Becca Stevens can often be found playing with open-eared jazz musicians, but Perfect Animal actually sounds closer to the folk rock of Court and Spark, Tom’s Diner, or St. Vincent’s less aggressive sounding work. Here with her working trio, Stevens’ multi-octave croon and polished songwriting shine on the hook-filled “Imperfect Animals” and the sonically layered “I Asked.” Always skilled interpreters of songs, the band does a radical makeover of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love,” a soaring take on Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You” and an acoustic version of Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna.”
