Fantastic

Great, great album. After ignoring Patti for many years, I bought Dream of Life and loved it and her since. Early 70's PS, to me, seemed angry (?) and a little too eclectic but this is one beautiful album. For the reviewer who said... "Looking for You" was great and the rest of the album is terrible" simply doesn't make any sense. It's very much like the rest of the album.

Dream of Life

I have listened to this album many times and it is gorgeous. The lyrics, sometimes simple and direct, allow the various instruments and lyrical orchestration to shine along with Patty's vocals. The overall musicality is very satisfying. It seems to be a true collaboration and therefore is different in feel from earlier Patty Smith albums. And I love her earlier albums. There are new influences (Motown, traditional music, classical music) along with good ole rock and roll, and this makes sense given Fred 'Sonic' Smith's Detroit roots and the couple's interest together in classical music. These are songs from grown-ups--people a bit lucky in love, maintaining a relationship and raising children. So, there are love songs--for the people, for a lover, for a child, but there is melancholia too and the knowledge that all is transient, loss will come--we love while we can.
