Honolulu-born ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro is famous for covers of rock songs, such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but his original compositions are also full of surprises. On Peace Love Ukulele, he brings out the emotional depth of his four-stringed instrument, doing heavy-metal shreds on “Bring Your Adz” and then pulling back with the delicate, funky phrasings of “Variation On a Dance.” There’s a cinematic quality to “Five Dollars Unleaded,” the brisk melody capturing the rush of new love.
